Description
If you don't already know Isaac Viteri, you undoubtedly will soon. His meteoric rise in 2024 included him becoming the Illinois and Midwest Regional champion, with an astounding 4th place finish at US Nationals and even a spot in finals at his first World Yo-Yo Contest. After he won MWR, Isaac and I sat down to discuss what his ideal yo-yo would look like. Right off the bat, Isaac and I agreed that we wanted this yo-yo to be cheap and accessible. Yo-yos are toys, and we don't think you should have to drop the equivalent of more than a couple Chipotle orders to afford one. Thus, the Capriccio is $50, and stands as the second cheapest yo-yo used in the 2024 World 1a Finals. It's big, it's powerful, and it can handle anything the modern yo-yo player could throw at it. We're incredibly stoked about this yo-yo, and we couldn't be more excited to get it out into the community.
Designer's Notes
Like its musical namesake, the Capriccio doesn't follow traditional ideas of yo-yo design either. Isaac's style is a very unique combination of high-risk body tricks and flowing slack rotations, two things that aren't usually complementary of one another in yo-yo design. To accommodate that, this yo-yo is BIG. Despite what some say, 51.41 mm is still very, very wide in the grand scheme of yo-yo design. This yo-yo started as a stretched out version of the Kairos, with shape and weight distribution inspiration coming from models like the Good Life Breeze, YoYoFactory ND, and SF Cadence ES. The difficulty for me as a designer came in keeping this yo-yo from falling into the "brick" category like most ultra-wide models on the market. After opting to work in 7075 aluminum, we were able to shift some weight around so that even at almost 68 grams, the Capriccio still moves with a lively and graceful charm that perfectly complements Isaac's freeform style of play. Somehow, this design only took one prototype. I held my thoughts until Isaac had played it, but once he got his at Worlds, we both quickly realized how right this yo-yo was. Sometimes you have to really force designs to work, and sometimes you just get really, really lucky.
